| Tues 21st July: Thanks to tremendous support from the team, Food Group’s first major event cruised seamlessly on the crest of a euphoric wave of plaudits at St Andrew’s Schoolroom. Featuring ingredients from within the Eden Valley, Ivan Day guided a rapt audience through the making of an English 17th Century 'Grand Salad', or Sallat as John Evelyn’s original recipe would have it. Using slides to illustrate various unusual (by today’s availabilities) plants which would have once been easily available, accompanied by a most knowledgeable commentary the packed (!) audience entered into the spirit of spectacular salad assembly. And the result, with an olive oil/vert juice dressing tasted delicious. The room was a buzz of delighted and interested conversation throughout the eating of this first course. Following was a 19th Century ice-cream making demonstration, illustrated with pages from a book devoting a chapter to the making of ice-cream published in Penrith, yes Penrith, in 1804. There were more flavours available to Penrithians then than there are today! However, as people were served a most delicious modern ice-cream from Abbot Lodge farm, topped by a divine red fruit coulis, no-one really felt aggrieved. A tremendous amount of time and effort went into this event, which also helped serve the purpose of raising the profile of PACT. A couple of short films made by Nigel Jenkins helped to underline this whilst also gently emphasising the wealth of local foods which are available in and around Penrith. The evening also appeared to stimulate a good deal of networking among the participants, which again, is one of PACT’s goals when it leads to the sharing of information leading to greater community involvement. Local food producers who supplied to the event included: High Cup Wines (Murton) - elderflower & apple / elderberry wines |
| PACT Publicity & Awareness Raising Events The above events are part of PACT's efforts to develop a program of 'awareness raising' events for 2009, all aimed at promoting the transition concept and the activities of PACT. We hope this will include public meetings, film nights, social events, food evenings, and who knows what else? Details of forthcoming events appear on this website and in local press. Ideas and offers of support always most welcome! |

During October 2008 PACT held a very successful meeting in Penrith to begin developing the action groups in key areas such as energy, transport, buildings, food, waste & recycling, education, health & well-being etc. The action groups are now forming and meeting to discuss and agree their initial ideas, identifying projects they may wish to pursue in each of these important areas.
The outcomes of this meeting will help shape the activities of PACT over coming months, starting to turn words into tangible actions and projects designed to kick-start the transition process for Penrith.

| Tues 2nd June: PACT's Resource and Waste (RAW!) action group successfully launched its campaign to reduce (hopefully eliminate?!) plastic bags from Penrith, seeking to engage with local shops and the community to find sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging. Several towns in the UK have already achieved plastic bag-free status in response to concerns over the harm to wildlife, the environment and sometimes to human health caused by plastic bag waste. Let's make Penrith next! More info from: | ![]() |
During the autumn PACT held a very successful FILM NIGHT in Penrith, with a packed audience enjoying several entertaining & inspirational environmental films, including:
