Tree planting at Kirkby Thore
Working on the steeper and less workable areas of a grade 2 ex-dairy farm in the Eden Valley, an area scant in trees and predominantly intensively farmed. We’ll be planting native broad leaves with a predominance of ash, mixed with oak, hazel, scot's pine, alder, crab apple, rowan, blackthorn, hawthorn and wild cherry. These will provide a wildlife corridor along a small stream as well as providing a sustainable source of wood fuel and coppice on a 20-25 year rotation for fence posts and building material. A great site to learn about farming and conservation.
The woods are arranged in three sections and will be dedicated to the farmer's son, nephew and late father.
Lunch, tea and biscuits will be provided. Yum.
No dogs please - ewes heavily pregnant.
Map here and directions are as follows: Turn off A66 into Kirkby Thore, signed for Gypsum Works. Go through village until reach turn off to Gypsum works on left (go past this) and 50 metres further there is a narrow lane on right just next to a large ruined stone barn. Follow this to the end (about half mile) and turn into farmyard on left. The postcode is CA10 1XL.
