Ventilation and air permeability of traditional dwellings – controlling moisture and maintaining building performance: a Lake District case study Diane Hubbard (Green Footsteps).

There is general acceptance that older homes need to be treated in a different way to modern dwellings, but (despite the significant number of homes involved in the UK) there is a lack of research into this field. Ventilation and its relationship to moisture in homes is particularly neglected.

Diane Hubbard recently completed an MSc at the Centre for Alternative Technology and will outline her research, which included a detailed study of a group of Lakeland cottages, together with an overview of the importance of ventilation in controlling moisture in dwellings.

As well as organising the Cumbria Green Build programme for CAfS, Diane's consultancy Green Footsteps carries out home energy audits, air permeability tests and related work, such as a recent evening course on understanding your traditional home.

She is continuing her research into ventilation in homes this winter with work for the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) as part of the team investigating the energy efficiency of listed dwellings.
