What is GBGW?
It is the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. Every year, thousands of people across the country come together to show that they care about our planet and our future.
For 2026 the theme was ‘Together for Good’. It reflected a simple truth: when we act as a community, we create real, practical benefits for our local places, for nature, and for our shared future.
Why is it important?
Climate change can often feel like an overwhelming problem that’s too big for one person to solve. GBGW changes that narrative. It proves that small, local actions, when added together, create a massive wave of change.
This week is a reminder that Penrith is more resilient when we work together.
Who was involved?
The Great Big Green Week programme was a true community effort, made possible by the local charities, businesses, and grassroots groups who stepped up to host these events. It is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose.
Proudly coordinated by: Penrith Action for Community Transition (PACT) With grateful support from: Westmorland & Furness Council and Zero Carbon Cumbria.
What is PACT all about?
In a nutshell, we’re here to help everyone in Penrith & Eden to tread a little more lightly on the planet. Our goal is to help tackle the climate crisis and improve our local environment, for the benefit of people and nature.
Penrith Action for Community Transition (PACT) is a local community group that’s been helping to reduce our area’s carbon footprint for over 15 years. We do this by running projects and events to give local people the inspiration and support to take action in their own lives
